So you have this sensation of loss. It's when you are cognizant of thinking about getting high, then choosing not to feel it. In other words not to indulge in the possibility of acting upon it. Not to actually allow yourself to amplify, explore, and experience the full range, extent, and gamut of ecstatic sensation that accompanies getting high. Because, it's my belief, that once having gotten high, the mind has the ability to replicate the sensation on its own. After all when you take a drug you're stimulating neurotransmitters naturally produced by the pituitary gland. So you can get high without doing drugs. Part of the appeal of getting high is the loss of control that accompanies the use and abuse of controlled substances — in other words taking more than you need to feel good. What I'm trying to explain is that abstinence (and I dislike that word because of the concomitant associations of restricted behavior, lack of freedom, moral judgment — but we'll use it for it's literal meaning of absence of drug use; voluntarily, self-controlled absence) entails the conscious decision not just to not use drugs but to inhibit the mind from emulating the experience of using drugs. That step I think I'm learning is not available as an apparent choice when you first quit. I've been clean I think about as long now as I ever have since I first started using meth. I don't know how long I have a bad sense of time but I think it's going on eight months and that is my previous record for being clean. This too, approaching the previous term of cleanliness, which is again is another pretty awful word (I think grammatically it's a 'back formation', a term Safire coined or elucidated in his collections of "On Language" articles for the NY Times Sunday Magazine) is something that brings about epiphanies and clarities. Anyway, the point I wished to make, and I grant that the stream of though seems circuitous and replete with caveats, asides, and meanderings, is that this choice to not allow thought to proceed uncontrolled from the notion of imagined drug consumption on to imagined drug use-induced elation is a step in advanced, sustained, voluntarily abstinence. This self-denial has as it's result a feeling of loneliness. It's not loneliness; it sort of makes you feel the same way lonely does. I'm good with that; it's just an odd conjunction of sentiments.  This is such an odd format and venue for these reflections. I've got used to putting them here. Once you express something... putting something into words helps one clarify ones thoughts. This may not be clear to anyone else but these few minutes have sorted it out in my own mind. It's like when you write a number down to remember it, or you dial it to fix the sequence in muscle memory, so delineating a complicated algorithm or here, a sequence of thought, at once makes it evident and evanescent. Therefore this info is no longer of use to me. Being the self-conscious thing that I am, I must needs record it.
